Laboratory’s scientific activity is divided into 7 thematic areas :
Early Earth (animator: Pascal Philippot)
Relationships between evolution of Earth’s dynamics, including initiation of plate tectonics, and its habitability.
Geodynamics (animators: Diane Arcay et Fanny Garel)
Characterise and explain the dynamics of the Earth’s plates and mantle, and their interactions with surface processes.
Hazard (animator: Matthieu Ferry)
Processes and systems that generate geological hazards: earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, surface instabilities, coastal erosion and flooding.
Hydrosystems (animators: Cédric Champollion and Delphine Roubinet)
Role of water in dynamics and processes of surface and subsurface hydrosystems.
Orogens & Basins (animators: Stéphane Dominguez & Nicolas Saspiturry)
Deformation and material transfer processes at the scale of sedimentary chains and basins.
Resources (animator: Roger Soliva)
Mineral, fluid and energy resources for rational use in the context of energy transition and fight against global warming.
Structures & Rheology (animator: Émilien Oliot)
From an administrative point of view and for resource management, Geosciences Montpellier is organized around six research teams :
Lithosphere Dynamics team (manager : Bruno Dhuime)
Geophysical and Satellite imaging team (manager : Cécilia Cadio)
Geology and Geophysics of Critical zone team (manager : Erik Doerflinger)
Reservoir and Resource Geology team (manager : Alain Chauvet)
Mantle and Interfaces team (manager : Emilien Oliot)
Porous Media Transfer Team (manager : Linda Luquot)
At the same time, 8 major inter-team projects are combining complementary approaches and know-how :
