This world-renowned national platform of RéGEF network comprises two scanning electron microscopes dedicated to measurement of crystallographic orientations. Processes studied are those of ductile or magmatic deformation and recrystallization, via measurement of preferential orientations of crystal lattices in rocks of Earth’s mantle and crust, but also in ice and metals.

Observation by optical microscopy is basis of much of the laboratory’s research. A fleet of around twenty microscopes and stereomicroscopes is available. It allows, among other things, to carry out microscopic observations in transmitted and reflected light, by cathodoluminescence, or to carry out microthermometric analysis of fluid inclusions. Some of these devices are equipped with digital cameras allowing image capture.
