Where to find us

The presence of data acquisition systems for geophysical measurements in boreholes, as well as boreholes reaching depths of up to 100 m, offers a unique opportunity to demonstrate well logging methods in practical exercises.
Since 2001, this site has been used for student training, including programs at ISTerre in Grenoble and the University of Montpellier. Other institutions have also used CEEL for training, such as the engineering schools EOPG and EOST in Strasbourg, the University of Pau and the Adour Region, ETH Zurich, and IGAL in Beauvais.

Beyond the training provided at CEEL, data from sites instrumented and monitored by the TMP team at the Geosciences Montpellier laboratory serve as the basis for teaching. For example, within the framework of the “Resources, Fluids and Reservoirs” course taught in the third year of the GBE program (Geosciences track at the University of Montpellier), a practical session was established based on the study of sediment cores from the Maguelone site (Hérault). The objectives of this practical session are to familiarize students with the observation and description of sedimentary records in cores, and the recognition of typical sedimentary facies (marine, fluvial, continental, lagoonal, lacustrine) in order to reconstruct the history of sedimentation by addressing the concepts of scale and eustatic variation, and to place this history within a broader regional geological context. It is also a matter of combining these observations with geophysical and field hydrological data, in order to reconstruct the architecture and current functioning of an aquifer in a coastal area.

As part of the European Horizon 2020 program (funded by Marie Skłodowska-Curie European Training Networks 765256) Saltgiant, a traninig course on drilling methods, in-well measurements, and analysis, was organized in Sorbas, Spain. The scientific drilling project was organized by the Transfers in Porous Media (TMP) team at Géosciences Montpellier. CEEL tools were used to train participants in in-well data acquisition..
Members of the Transfers in Porous Media (TMP) team at Géosciences Montpellier participate annually in the summer schools organized as part of the IODP (until 2024) and IODP3 (since 2025) programs. They contribute to teaching the fundamental principles of well geophysics methods and operations. Software exercises using data from these programs have also been produced or co-produced by our team. These training sessions are tailored to train participants in the operation of the software, while also connecting it to the scientific findings derived from these analyses:
